Tip 10: Parent/Teen Role Play
Purpose:
To practice fluency and negotiating skills, requesting and granting
requests. Uses vocabulary for household chores and free-time
activities. Encourages the use of the first-conditional (if you do
this, I will...). Best used with intermediate and higher learners.
Preparation Time: 30
minutes to prepare role play cards
Materials: one parent or teen role card for each
student
Preparation:
Create the parent and teen cards. They could look
something like this:
Parent
You want your child to:
clean room every day
do homework for one hour a day
babyside little brother on Saturday
|
Teen
You want to:
go to the movies this weekend
have some money for a CD
(you do not like your little brother)
|
Procedure:
- Set the context for the role play,
drawing on the experiences of any learners who have teenagers at home.
Pre-teach any vocabulary from the cards that may be unfamiliar to the
students, maybe by making lists of what teens want to do and what their
parents want them to do. This would be a good time to address cultural
differences between American teens and teens from other cultures. You
may want to have learners listen to a similar conversation before doing
the role play.
- Give out the role play cards to students
in pairs. Answer any questions students may have about their cards.
Explain that they are going to have a conversation in pairs between
teens and parents and that they must come to a compromise that both
agree on. Give learners time to prepare if necessary and time limit to
complete their role play. When students have finished, conduct a class
feedback session about the agreements each pair made.
Variation: If you have an odd number of
students, you could have one teenage speak with both parents.
