Tutor Tip 19: Vocabulary Sort

Purpose: review vocabulary, build comprehension

Preparation Time: 15 minutes

Materials: reading passage, word cards

Preparation:

  1. Choose a reading passage.
  2. Select 20-30 vocabulary items from the reading selection (fewer for beginning-level students).
  3. Select words that are related to two different characters, two different groups or two different situations.
  4. Write the words on small cards.
Procedure:
  1. Have student read the passage.
  2. Divide a sheet of paper into two equal columns.
  3. Give the student cards with the vocabulary words written on them.
  4. Have the students place the cards in the appropriate columns.
  5. After sorting, have the student re-read the story to determine if she/he sorted the vocabulary correctly.
