Tip 19: Vocabulary Sort
Purpose: review vocabulary, build comprehension
Preparation Time: 15
minutes
Materials: reading passage, word cards
Preparation:
- Choose a reading passage.
- Select 20-30 vocabulary items from the reading selection (fewer for beginning-level students).
- Select words that are related to two different characters, two different groups or two different situations.
- Write the words on small cards.
- Have student read the passage.
- Divide a sheet of paper into two equal
columns.
- Give the student cards with the
vocabulary words written on them.
- Have the students place the cards in the appropriate columns.
- After sorting, have the student re-read
the story to determine if she/he sorted the vocabulary correctly.
