Tutor Tip #3: Describe the Picture

Purpose: To practice present, progressive tense

Preparation Time: 15 minutes

Materials: copies of a picture for each pair of students; paper/pencils

Preparation: Find a picture or drawing with a lot of action in it. Make enough copies for each pair of students to have a copy.

Procedure:

  1. Have students work in pairs.
  2. Give them a copy of the picture.
  3. Give them two minutes to just look at the picture.
  4. Give them three minutes to talk about what they see in the picture, generating sentences in the present progressive tense (e.g., The men are cooking).
  5. Give them five minutes to write as many sentences as they can describing what they see happening in the picture.
  6. The pair with the most correct sentences wins.
