Tutor Tip #4: Emergency Contacts

Purpose: To review family vocabulary and relationships; to discuss the importance of emergency contact lists; to create an emergency contact list.

Preparation Time: none

Materials: paper and pencils; a sample emergency contact list

Procedure:

  1. Learners create a table with the following headings: name, age, relationship, phone number.
  2. Learners make a list in the names column of people in their family.
  3. Learners complete the table.
  4. Conduct a classroom discussion about the need for emergency contacts, situations they may be necessary in, what things to consider in choosing an emergency contact, etc.
  5. Each learner chooses two people from the list to be emergency contacts.
  6. Learners share why they chose those two people.
  7. Learners get a half-sheet of paper and write Emergency Contact List at the top.
  8. Learners copy the information for their contacts.
