Tutor Tip 8: Newspaper Bingo

Purpose: To teach readers to pick out the important who, what, where, when and how details in a newspaper article.

Preparation Time: 15 minutes

Materials: blank Bingo cards, newspapers or copied articles

Preparation: Create bingo cards such as the one below. Choose newspaper articles that are related to your learners' interests and at your learners' reading level.

Who
What
When
Where
Why
How

Procedure:

  1. Explain to the students that newspaper articles usually include information about who, what, when, where, why and how.
  2. Give them the bingo cards and explain the columns.
  3. Have them read the article and fill in the appropriate information in each column. If the students are at a lower reading level, you can read the article to them and have them listen for the information.
  4. When the students have filled in all the answers they can from the article, they should choose another article and repeat the activity. They will need to read at least five articles to complete the task. Choose short articles and encourage students to skim for the answers. Remember, you can always READ the article to the students.
  5. The goal is to fill out the sheet or to complete a column.
